Virginia Coal Mines Reopen with Safety Measures Due to COVID-19

Patriot Mining in Wise County reopened Monday after closing last week, according to the Virginia Department of Mines Minerals and Energy.

ArcelorMittal Extra Energy in Tazewell County idled Friday. The company said the closure was due to the market conditions because of COVID-19. Fifty-one miners were furloughed. Company officials are not sure when the mine will reopen.

All Contura Energy mines have reopened. Officials said the miners are wearing masks.
