President Donald Trump on June 2 nominated energy attorney and former Federal Energy Regulatory Commission official Laura Swett to take Mark Christie’s seat at FERC after his term expires June 30.

Swett’s nomination to a five-year term will require Senate confirmation.

In an X post, Christie said, “I will remain in office for a few weeks after June 30 to help get key orders out.”

Swett is an attorney at the Washington, D.C., firm Vinson & Elkins. According to the firm, Swett has represented electric utilities and pipeline companies before FERC “in a broad range of matters involving enforcement/market manipulation, rates, market rules and regulation, cybersecurity, licensing and wholesale power sales.”

Between 2014 and 2019, Swett worked at FERC as a legal and policy adviser to former commission members Bernard McNamee and Chair Kevin McIntyre and as an attorney adviser to the Office of Enforcement’s Division of Investigations.

Christie has served on the commission since 2021. Trump named Christie FERC’s chair on Jan. 20, after former Chair Willie Phillips resigned following Trump’s return to office.

Trump has not yet nominated a replacement to fill the seat that Phillips vacated.
