The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Foundation (SMEF) has awarded the 2015 recipients of the foundation’s prestigious scholarship programs. The scholarships will be presented at the February 20, 2016 SMEF Annual Gala Banquet during the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, Arizona. Helping SME students reach their educational and career goals is one of the foundation’s top priorities.

“SMEF is committed to strengthening the professional workforce and extending educational opportunities to the industry’s future leaders. Mining, metallurgical, geological, and geophysical engineering programs in schools across the nation are among the best in the world, and these talented students will enhance the power of the mining industry,” said SME Executive Director David L. Kanagy.

The SME Foundation currently facilitates seven scholarship programs. Recipients of the 2015 scholarships are:

• Elizabeth Radcliffe, University of Utah, recipient of the $4,000 MMSA/SMEF Past Presidents Scholarship. The Mining and Metallurgical Society of America teamed with SMEF to offer a scholarship which provides financial support to students majoring in studies that encompass aggregates, coal, industrial minerals, metals, and related mineral sciences.

• Ann Perry, Queens University; Rahul Thareja, University of Nevada-Reno; and Kun Zhang, Colorado School of Mines, are recipients of the $5,000 Syd S. and Felicia F. Peng Ground Control in Mining Scholarships which promote the science of ground control engineering.

• Kevin Moran, Colorado School of Mines; Robert Murray, University of British Columbia; and Laura Steeves, University of Kentucky, are recipients of the McIntosh Engineering Scholarship. The award is presented to undergraduate students entering their junior year with a focus on underground mining. This renewable scholarship has a total potential funding of $12,000 per student.

• Elizabeth Radcliffe, University of Utah; and Brooklyn Yonts, University of Kentucky, have received the J.H. Fletcher & Co. Scholarship which is awarded to students with a desire for improving safety and productivity in the underground mining/tunneling industry.

• Caroline Dziak, Missouri University of Science & Technology; and Brian Minkin, University of Nevada-Reno, are recipients of the Ernest K. Lehmann Scholarship which is awarded to students pursuing an undergraduate degree in geology or geological sciences.

• Dr. Jing Liu, a graduate of the University of Utah, will be presented the Rong Yu Wan Ph.D. Dissertation Award in Metallurgical Engineering which supports the presentation of a doctoral degree graduate’s research findings in the area of metallurgical engineering.

The George V. Weisdack Memorial Scholarship in the field of mining engineering is awarded annually to a University of Pittsburgh student. In 2015, a recipient was not chosen.

The SME Foundation supports projects that disseminate mining/mineral information and technology worldwide; encourages professional development; educates children, teachers, and the public about the significant role that the minerals industry plays in their everyday lives; builds consensus for a strong, environmentally sound minerals industry in the United States and the world; and supports college-level students and programs meeting industry demands for engineers and researchers in the future.
