The Pennington County Commission advanced an overhaul of a mining ordinance Tuesday with a change that would give the commission the final say on mining applications.

During a meeting at the County Administration Building, the commissioners went through each page of the proposed 21-page ordinance before unanimously approving a first reading of the ordinance.

The commission will review the ordinance again during a special 4 p.m. Friday meeting. The second reading and final vote on the ordinance is scheduled for another special meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The ordinance now includes language stating that recommendations on mining applications from the Planning Commission would automatically go to the county commission for final approval.

That change was unanimously approved by the commission Tuesday, after a previous draft of the ordinance said the Planning Commission’s decisions on mining applications would only go to the county commission if someone filed an appeal.
