NETL Launches Its New Carbon Storage Planning Inquiry Tool, PlanIT
The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has launched its new carbon storage planning inquiry tool, or PlanIT, in a move to simplify carbon storage feasibility assessments by providing easy access to data from 14 authoritative sources.
This interactive tool, which supports the planning of carbon storage projects by consolidating geologic, technical, social, and environmental data in one place, is now available on NETL’s Energy Data eXchange (EDX).
NETL geologist Paige Morkner, the principal investigator for PlanIT, pointed out that while data is often available, it is scattered across multiple sources, making it challenging for stakeholders to access and utilize.
To address this issue, NETL’s data science team developed PlanIT as a user-friendly, dashboard-style web application.
The tool allows users to visualize, analyze, and query data assets, facilitating efficient carbon storage planning and resource assessments.
It offers stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, and operators, access to authoritative datasets on factors crucial to carbon storage projects.
These datasets can be geographically filtered, enabling users to update statistics and charts based on specific areas of interest.
PlanIT was developed as part of NETL’s Science-based Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Institute (SAMI), which applies artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to accelerate clean energy technology development.
The tool is part of the EDX Carbon Capture and Sequestration (EDX4CCS) portfolio which provides a strategic data infrastructure for advancing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.
PlanIT, along with other CCS tools, is hosted on EDX’s DisCO2ver platform, designed to support rapid deployment of CCS projects nationwide.
According to Jen Bauer, NETL’s EDX4CCS technical director, tools like PlanIT help streamline carbon storage projects, bringing the vision of a decarbonized future closer to reality.
NETL is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory that drives innovation and delivers technological solutions for an environmentally sustainable and prosperous energy future. By using its world-class talent and research facilities, NETL is ensuring affordable, abundant, and reliable energy that drives a robust economy and national security, while developing technologies to manage carbon across the full life cycle, enabling environmental sustainability for all Americans.
