Two of Montana’s congressman are calling on state leaders to give approval to the expansion of the Montanore Mine near the Cabinet Mountains, saying the project would “create much needed jobs” in Northwest Montana.

Mines Management, Inc. is hoping to hear by the end of the month whether the U.S. Forest Service and Montana Department of Environmental Quality to give final approval to the mine expansion after years of consideration.

The company wants to re-open a section of mine originally developed by a Canadian company and expand extraction of what it says is one of the richest deposits of silver and copper in the region. However, environmental groups have fought the expansion on fears of water quality and grizzly bear impacts.

Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) and Representative Ryan Zinke (R-mt) wrote a letter Thursday urging both agencies to sign off on the final permits by the deadline at the end of the month. The letter urges Governor Bullock to support DEQ’s proposal to allow phased development of the mine, saying that will give the Libby area an economic boost, while offering assurances that the mine will be developed responsibly.

“We urge you to consider the benefits of a comprehensive approval for all the required permits and the benefits of the Montanore project to the local Northwest Montana community and our state,” Daines and Zinke wrote.

“Employing regulatory flexibility by your staff through a full permit approval will provide assurances the community and company require to move forward. The local community has waited a long time for the process to be completed. We respectfully request for you to prioritize this project and for DEQ to issue a full ROD as expeditiously as possible so that this important project can proceed,” the letter continued.

At full production, the Montanore Project is expected to create full-time jobs for 450 people, with an annual payroll of $12 million during the production phase of operations.
