The Senate Finance Committee has approved the Miner’s Protection Act with a non-partisan vote, which opens the door for the measure to be taken up by the entire Senate.

Finance committee chair Orrin Hatch, of Utah, put the bill on the agenda and it passed by an 18-8 vote.

The measure would move money from the Abandoned Mine Reclamation Fund into the pension and healthcare plans of retired United Mine Workers of America union members and their families.

About 120,000 people benefit from the plans, including 22,000 in West Virginia.

Without the government’s help, those miners are expected to lose their pensions and healthcare benefits

Senator Shelly Moore Capito said she’d like to have the full senate consider the proposal before the end of the year.
