ICMM said it has named Tom Palmer, president and chief executive officer of Newmont, as its new chair. Palmer succeeds Iván Arriagada, CEO of Antofagasta Minerals.

ICMM is governed by its council which comprises the CEOs of its 24 member companies. The chair is appointed from within this group and serves in the position for approximately two years.

“I am delighted to welcome Tom as our new chair as we embark on our new strategy to drive responsible mining practices under a consolidated standard while enhancing dialogue and engagement with our stakeholders. Tom has led by example in this regard, having chaired ICMM’s Social Performance Advisory Group and through his genuine sustainability leadership within our industry,” said Rohitesh Dhawan, president and CEO of ICMM.

“I am very grateful to Ivan for his leadership which saw ICMM make significant progress in the last two years. Key milestones included our landmark position statements on nature, diversity, equity & inclusion, and updated commitments on Indigenous peoples, and significant progress on members’ implementation of the global industry standard on tailings management and the development of a consolidated responsible mining standard,” added Dhawan.

“Newmont is a founding member of ICMM, sharing its vision for a safe, just, and sustainable mining industry. I look forward to working closely with ICMM leadership, council members, and the wider mining industry. My focus will be on building support across the sector for a consolidated mining standard. I believe this to be key to enhancing the reputation of the industry and give stakeholders confidence that the materials we mine are done so in a responsible manner,” said Tom Palmer, president and chief executive officer of Newmont.

“It has been an honor to lead the ICMM council, and I am proud of the progress we have made, especially on the issues of tailings management, nature, diversity, equity & inclusion and better engagement with Indigenous peoples. All of these have contributed to improving the standards of the global mining industry. ICMM plays an essential role in championing responsible mining practices, which is more critical than ever as the world’s demand for metals and minerals is set to grow to meet the needs of the energy transition. Working together, we can ensure those materials are produced responsibly for the benefit of the common good,” said Iván Arriagada, CEO of Antofagasta.

ICMM stands for mining with principles. They bring together a third of the global mining and metals industry, along with key partners to drive leadership, action and innovation for sustainable development, ultimately delivering a positive contribution to society. Through collaboration, ICMM member companies set the standard for responsibly produced minerals and metals in a safe, just, and sustainable world.
