Fatality at Oak Grove Resources Underground Mine in Adger, Alabama

A 52-year-old miner is dead after an incident at a mine in West Jefferson County.

According to the United Mine Workers of America, Jose Lara leaves behind a wife and three children. He was killed in an incident Wednesday morning at the Oak Grove Resources Mine in Adger.

Federal investigators from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are at the mine to determine the cause of the incident.

The Jefferson County Coroner says Lara was working in an underground mine when he suffered blunt force injuries due to a reported rock collapse.

The incident happened just after midnight Wednesday morning.

Operations at the mine and plant are stopped during the investigation.

This is the ninth coal mine fatality of 2024 for the U.S. and the first this year in Alabama.

The Oak Grove mine has been the focus of federal safety inspections. A March 2024 impact inspection resulted in 39 violations issued.

Ownership of the mine recently changed hands. The Alabama Surface Mining Commission released these details; Mans Larsson (39.95 percent, Ryan Murray (15.98 percent), Armin Von Linde (15.98 percent), P3-CMDY, LLC (14.70 percent), other (13.39 percent)
