C&A Cutter Head Celebrates 25 Years
September 20, 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of C&A Cutter Head, Inc. the only wholly U.S. owned custom manufacturer of shearer cutting drums in the United States.
C&A Cutter Head was founded in 1994 by Clyde Hutzell and Tony Campbell. Cylde Hutzell and Tim Hutzell, Clyde’s brother, launched the sales and engineering office in Pennsylvania, while Tony Campbell had the manufacturing facility in Virginia. Both locations came with extensive experience in longwall equipment.
Clyde began his career at Kennametal where he headed up the shearer drum division. He left Kennametal and co-founded Advanced Cutting Systems (ACS), which specialized in shearer cutting drums, before teaming up with Tony Campbell to start C&A Cutter Head. Tim Hutzell also worked for ACS as a welder, draftsman, and purchasing agent before becoming product manager at C&A Cutter Head. Tony Campbell was operating a successful manufacturing facility in Virginia specializing in longwall line pans, which would later grow into Longwall Associates, Inc.
“We have achieved this milestone through hard work, dedication and the culture of customization that exists throughout our entire organization. We have dedicated ourselves to 25 years of product innovation and manufacturing excellence to provide our customers with the highest quality, most durable shearer cutting drums available in the U.S., said Tony Campbell.
C&A Cutter Head has custom designed and manufactured 1,065 sets shearer cutting drums, or 2,130 individual drums over the span of 25 years. In terms of production averages, this means producing seven shearer drums a month for 300 months or 25 years. Currently, the company works with over half of the existing U.S. longwall mines designing, manufacturing and rebuilding their shearer drums and occupy over half the U.S. market share of operating shearer cutting drums. C&A Cutter Head, Inc. also manufactures a line of custom designed and field proven blocks and sleeves that compliment their line of shearer drums.
“In October of 1994 we received our first purchase order for the OEM supply of a set of shearer cutting drums for Meigs #2 Mine, which was owned by American Electric Power. That Ohio mine operated in some of the toughest mining conditions of the early 90’s.” said co-founder Clyde Hutzell.
“The geological conditions are a defining factor in the custom design of our shearer drums. At the heart of every C&A Cutter Head installation you have completely customized shearer drums working flawlessly with the shearer for a successful operation” added Hutzell.
“Through the years, we have developed and maintained a consistent customer following based, solely, on the performance of our shearer drums. That speaks volumes about how we custom design and meticulously manufacture our equipment,” said Tim Hutzell.
The business has been a huge success as C&A Cutter Head is one of only a few remaining suppliers of shearer cutting drums in the U.S.
