Aureus Mining has been granted permission to re-start discharges from its tailing facility at the New liberty mine in Liberia.

The miner had to shut down its processing plant at the mine in May after too much cyanide leaked.

The Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia has now given the go-ahead for tailings discharges to re-start, with a detailed start-up plan submitted to Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy for formal approval.

The detailed start-up plan includes a gradual ramp-up in operations with waste and low grade ore towards name plate capacity.

Processing is now expected to begin again in the next few weeks (mid-June) following a gravity screen replacement and a full mill re-line.

The reline involves the mill being fitted with more heavy duty liners than originally supplied and improved lifters and grates.

Investigations to date have shown that excess cyanide discharges were recorded at the plant and downstream periodically between mid-December 2015 and March 2016.

Studies are underway on the downstream impact and rehabilitation actions required, Aureus said.
