Anglo American and Siemens Collaborate to Accelerate Mining Technology Capabilities in Africa

Mining Global reported that Anglo American Platinum has partnered with Siemens to collaborate together an exploring the new and exponential technology opportunity across the African mining industry.

Siemens has provided automation equipment and industrial networks to assist Anglo American’s Engineering Skills Training Center.

Ms. Sabine Dall’ Omo CEO of Siemens Southern and Eastern Africa explained that “As a leader in automation, we are continuously expanding our leadership role in Industrial Digitization.”

Ms. Omo said that “There is an opportunity, especially in Africa to embrace new and exponential technologies combined with human talent to accelerate industrialization and drive economic growth. “We are proud to be supporting Anglo American Platinum to advance skills and opportunities in Africa,”

Siemens understands the challenges facing the mining industry. Diminishing productivity, harsh climates, remote sites, rising energy costs and water scarcity to name a few.

The company acts as a trusted mining partner, working with some of the worlds leading mining operators to understand how technology and automation can truly unlock the potential of the industry, and setting new benchmarks.

Mr. Gary Humphries, Anglo American Platinum’s Executive Head for Processing said that “Siemens and Anglo-American Platinum have been in partnership since 2010 and we have seen approximately 298 artisans successfully trained and qualified at this centre. This vital contribution by Siemens to ESTC will significantly contribute towards the development of the human resource capabilities of our artisans and will help broaden the thinking of the students to explore new career capabilities. We celebrate the handover of the Siemens Simatic Wall and look forward to the role it will play in training the current and next generation of skilled artisans.”

The ETSC provides engineering skills training for Stope Servicemen, Learnerships, Apprenticeships; Short Courses, Foremen Development, Planned Maintenance and various specialised short courses following the growing demand for qualified artisans in the economy.
