An estimated 117 people who work at a Pike County coal mine are expected to be laid off when the mine shuts down in November.

Alpha Natural Resources has issued a notice alerting the 114 Sidney Coal employees and three Maxxim support personnel at its Process Energy Mine in Pike County that the mine is expected to go idle Nov. 7, said Steve Hawkins, spokesman for Alpha.

Under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN, employers are required to give 60 days’ notice of plant closings and mass layoffs.

Hawkins said the decision to shutter the mine was “based upon the continued depressed coal market.”

He said the Process Energy mine is the company’s last active mine in Kentucky. The rest of Alpha’s 18 mines are in West Virginia.

Coal jobs have been in steep decline in Kentucky in recent years and now stand at their lowest level since 1898.
