The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) announced Monday night that a tentative collective bargaining agreement had been reached between the UMWA and Warrior Met Coal, Inc. The union is not releasing details of the agreement until its members have heard them and held a ratification vote. Miners at Warrior Met have been striking since 10:00 p.m. on April 1.

“I am so very proud of our members at Warrior Met for standing up for themselves, their families and their communities,” said UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts.

“Going on strike is a difficult thing to do, but they have shown tremendous unity on the picket lines. Their story is being told across the world right now, and it is one of strength, determination and solidarity,” added Roberts.

“The decision to begin this strike rested with me. The decision to end the strike now rests with the membership of the union at Warrior Met. If they ratify this tentative agreement, the strike will end and they will have a new contract. If they do not ratify it, the strike will continue and we will seek further negotiations with the company,” concluded Roberts.

According to a news release, contract explanation meetings will be held on Wednesday, April 7. As per the UMWA Constitution, the ratification vote will be held 48 hours after the explanation meetings at each Local Union among dues-paying members in good standing. The vote will be on Friday, April 9. The results of the vote will be announced as soon as it is certified by the UMWA’s auditor/tellers.

About Warrior Met Coal
Warrior Met Coal is a U.S.-based, environmentally and socially minded supplier to the global steel industry. It is dedicated entirely to mining non-thermal metallurgical (met) coal used as a critical component of steel production by metal manufacturers in Europe, South America and Asia. Warrior is a large-scale, low-cost producer and exporter of premium met coal, also known as hard coking coal (HCC), operating highly efficient longwall operations in its underground mines based in Alabama. The HCC that Warrior produces from the Blue Creek, AL, coal seam contains very low sulfur and has strong coking properties and is of a similar quality to coal referred to as the premium HCC produced in Australia. The premium nature of Warrior’s HCC makes it ideally suited as a base feed coal for steel makers.
