Poly Met Mining Corp. said the Minnesota Supreme Court, in a decision, sent NewRange Copper Nickel’s water discharge permit for the NorthMet project back to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for further clarification and documentation.

NewRange responded in its own news release that it “looks forward to working with the respective state, federal and tribal agencies to address the court’s ruling,” expressing confidence that the additional proceedings will “confirm the project protects water quality.”

Today’s decision is not expected to have any impact on the transaction announced last month where Glencore will acquire full ownership of PolyMet, subject to approval by PolyMet shareholders, court approval and other customary closing conditions.

NewRange Copper Nickel is a joint venture between Teck and PolyMet and consists of the NorthMet and Mesaba deposits located in northeastern Minnesota, which are part of the Duluth Complex. The joint venture creates a path to develop a new domestic supply of critical minerals for the low-carbon transition through responsible mining.
