W.Va. House Bill Extends Life of Nine Coal-fired Power Plants
A bill passed this year by the West Virginia Legislature that will help maintain and strengthen the state’s coal industry went into effect this month and has been applauded by the WV Coal Association.
House Bill 2014 incentivizes microgrid and data center development in the state but also has a component that will extend the life of the nine coal-fired power plants in the state to provide needed power.
Coal Association President Chris Hamilton said the bill will reinvigorate coal production and stabilize the economy of mining communities.
“This critically important legislation prioritizes coal for existing and new energy capacity and requires utilities to maintain their plants to operate at optimum levels,” Hamilton said.
As part of the bill, the state Public Service Commission will be required to include detailed upgrade and maintenance plans for plants as well as an analysis to take action necessary to extend the life of each generating unit beyond their planned retirement date.
Data centers, artificial intelligence and electrification mandates drive demand for power across the country, Hamilton said, and coal’s dependability and affordability have never been more critical.
