United Coal Opens Morgan Camp Coal Mine, W. Va.
United Coal has opened the Morgan Camp mine, a new production facility near the Upshur County and Randolph County border.
The new facility is being operated by United Coal’s Carter Roag subsidiary and features 2 super-section mining units. According to mine officials, the mine has proven reserves of 5.1 million tons. The subsidiary plans to mine the reserve for 8 years with a peak annual production of 670 thousand tons.
The mine will extract from the Lower Sewell seam, which officials say contains high-vol A grade coal.
Full production of the operation’s first unit is expected to begin in December, with the second production beginning in the second quarter of 2018.
United Coal says most of the workforce for the new mine will be filled by transferring employees from its Pleasant Hill mine nearby, which is winding down production.Officials say no temporary layoffs are expected in the transition.
