The U.S. House of Representatives elected to reestablish the National Coal Council, solidifying an executive order from President Donald Trump.

The National Coal Council has historically offered insight on coal integration in national energy. The council operated for decades lapsing under the Biden Administration. Locals within the industry said there will always be a place for coal with regard to national energy production.

“Coal’s always been a huge economic driver in West Virginia. They call us ‘coal country’ for a reason here in the south,” said John Rakes, Insider Sales Representative with American Mine Power Inc.

“As long as that always exists, there’s always going to be an economic driver for coal in West Virginia and jobs for people. Because we mine some of the best coal around,” added Rakes.

President Trump called for the reestablishment of the council earlier this year. He said the order is part of a plan to “reinvigorate America’s beautiful clean coal industry.”
