Two coal miners were killed and one other injured as a result of a landslide incident inside a coal mine in Balochistan’s resource-rich Dukki area on Tuesday evening.

Levies sources said the miners were working thousands of feet deep inside the mine when they got hit by the landslide. Rescue workers were called to recover the miners from inside the mine.

One miner was pulled alive from the rubble and was shifted to nearby basic health unit in Loralai for medical treatment. The miners could not be immediately identified.

The bodies of deceased miners were also retrieved from the mine.

A large number of miners from nearby coal mines also gathered outside the affected mine.

Safety condition inside coal mines remained poor as explosions and land sliding inside mines in the area has become order of the day.

Dukki is district Loralai’s Tehsil and it is enriched with coal reservoirs. Most of the coal miners belong to areas of Southern Afghanistan and Swat area.

While miners across the globe work in hazardous conditions, the predicament of mine workers in this country is particularly acute. Mine safety in Pakistan is very poor and several deaths are reported every year.

Workers use obsolete equipment and there are hardly any safety protocols in place.
