Two Fatalities at SSR-Mining’s Marigold Mine, Nevada
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and Mine Safety and Health Administration are investigating a mining accident between a haul truck and a light vehicle that killed two people at the Marigold Mine Tuesday afternoon.
The Associated Press reports that the two workers who were killed in an accident were a safety coordinator and a mine trainee.
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration said Wednesday eight other people were taken to a local hospital.
MSHA spokeswoman Amy Louviere says the two victims died when the van they were riding in was run over by a haul truck.
She says the haul truck driver was hospitalized for treatment of shock. Seven trainees who were passengers in the van were taken to the hospital but subsequently released.
Marigold requested all available resources and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Humboldt General Hospital, the Winnemucca Police Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol all responded to the incident northwest of Battle Mountain.
Operations at the mine have been suspended, and SSR-Mining, the company that is associated with the mine, has released a statement on the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleagues, and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to their families,” said Paul Benson, President and CEO of SSR Mining. “This incident is particularly upsetting as the health and safety of our employees is our highest priority. We are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the accident and are offering support to our colleagues’ families and our employees at the mine site.”
