Trump Speaks at CPAC With Positive View on Coal Mining Advancements

Published: February 26, 2018 |

President Donald Trump said Friday that his administration has revamped the nation’s coal industry after the previous administration sought to ignore coal states.

“Coal miners have been mistreated, and they’re not being mistreated anymore,” Trump told an audience at CPAC to a rousing ovation. “We are doing tremendous business,” he said, adding that the U.S. needs to provide the world with fossil fuels like coal.

“We have too big a deficit with Vietnam,” Trump noted. “Buy coal! They use a lot of coal. Buy coal!” he said about the U.S.’s need to sell coal to the southeast Asian country. Trump pegged much of his presidential campaign on the pledge to bring the beleaguered coal industry back from the brink of oblivion.

Other members of Trump’s administration have already appeared and spoken at the annual conference, including Vice President Pence, Secretary of Labor Alex Acosta and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. Energy Department chief Rick Perry and Interior Department head Ryan Zinke are also expected to talk on a panel at CPAC.
