SME Salutes Mine Rescue Teams

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) believes that the safety and health of the global mining workforce is of paramount importance, as evidenced by the creation of its Health & Safety Division in 2014, an increase in the number of technical sessions and symposia it offers which are focused on worker safety, and the SME publication and eBook availability of the Mine Rescue Manual.

SME is committed to making available expertise to enhance workplace safety and health, not only for its members, but for the entire mining and minerals community. On Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) honors the courage, commitment and sacrifice made by first responders with its annual Mine Rescue Day.

“SME supports the mission and purpose of MSHA, which is to prevent injuries and promote safe and healthful workplaces for the nation’s miners. We invite our colleagues to join us on Oct. 30 in paying tribute to mine rescue teams and the men and women who risk their lives in dangerous and often life-threatening situations in the service of their colleagues,” said David L. Kanagay, executive director of SME.
