The agreement inked earlier this month by USA firm Xcoal Energy & Resources and Ukraine’s state-owned energy firm Centrenergo will see some 700,000 tonnes of coal delivered by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s pro-Western authorities are anxious to retain US support in its standoff with Russian Federation following the ouster of a Kremlin-backed president in 2014 US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross welcomed the deal with Pennsylvania-based Xcoal, which is one of the largest exporters of coal from the United States.

XCoal Energy and Resources stated that shipments of USA coal are planned to arrive in Ukraine in late August or early September, just in time to stockpile fuel for the winter heating season. “Partnerships like this are crucial to the path forward to achieve energy dominance”.

Thermal coal, used in power plants and for heating, has a much lower market price than metallurgical coal.

Xcoal President Ernie Thrasher traveled to Ukraine for the announcement.

Xcoal is based in Pennsylvania, a state that flipped and voted for Trump in the November presidential elections.

The Ukrainian government’s decision to purchase American thermal coal will boost the USA economy and help it establish global energy dominance, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a briefing on Monday. The first shipment, at a cost of $113 a metric ton, is expected to leave the USA port of Baltimore in August.

Ukraine suffered widespread power cuts in the winter of 2014/15 due to the squeeze on anthracite supplies. A fresh round of talks between the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France failed to produce a breakthrough earlier this month.
