NIOSH’s Mobile Unit Gives Coal Miners Free Health Screenings
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) held free health screenings today for coal miners in the area.
The screenings will provide early detection of black lung disease. Since 1999, the prevalence of black lung disease has been increasing.
Most miners often contract the disease through breathing respirable coal mine dust.
Screenings include a work history questionnaire, a chest radiograph, a respiratory assessment questionnaire, spirometry testing and blood pressure screening.
Once the 30 minute testing is complete, in the state-of-the-art NIOSH mobile testing unit, they’ll receive their results in the mail.
Appointments are encouraged for the screenings, but walk-ins are accepted.
“We do screenings for coal miners and we also do research. This is a completely free service to the miners,” said Melissa Yancheski, acting coordinator for the mobile surveillance unit.
Tomorrow the unit will be at the Kingwood Civic Center in Preston County. Screenings will start at 9 a.m. and go until 6 p.m.
