New Trump Ad Features Ohio Coal Miner

Published: November 7, 2016 |

No insults, no invective and no Hillary Clinton.

Instead, Donald Trump’s new TV ad features only an Ohio coal miner, Bob Boals of Scio in Harrison County, quietly talking about his livelihood, which “they’re trying to take away.”

“This election’s critical for my family,” Boals, wearing a hard hat with a head lamp, says.

“I think Donald Trump cares about the workin’ man, because the workin’ man’s made him what he is. And Donald Trump has given this whole area around here a glimpse of hope for our future.”

The new 30-second spot is airing in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania - prime coal-mining country for what’s left of the industry battered by environmental regulations and competition from cheap natural gas.

Clinton enranged coal miners with her remark last summer in Columbus that when clean energy expands “we’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.”

She later apologized and said “it was a misstatement because what I was saying is the way things are going now, they will continue to lose jobs. It didn’t mean that we were going to do it. What I said is that is going to happen unless we take action to help and prevent it.”

Clinton has endorsed a bill to guarantee miners’ health care and pension benefits, a proposal endorsed by Ohio Sens. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, and Rob Portman, a Republican.
