The state’s Executive Council will decide the most recent mineral leases bids received by the Department of Natural Resources on Sept. 8 in St. Paul.

Five mining companies submitted sealed bids in June on DNR mining units in Beltrami, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods and St. Louis counties. Of the 195,324 acres offered for lease where the state owns the mineral rights, 112,585 received bids.

The state’s Executive Council — the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state and state auditor — must approve the bids before companies can begin exploration.

Most of the proposed exploration is under state managed forest lands and is aimed at copper, nickel, zinc and gold.
