One positive thing that came out of the disaster at the Sago Mine is an increase and focus on mine safety.

Over the past decade, newer legislation has made the mines a safer place to work.  This has always been a priority for those in charge, but the explosion that resulted in the loss of 12 lives was truly a wake-up call for the industry.

“There’s not an objective that’s more important to them, than making sure all the workers make it home to their families.  So there’s been an enormous amount of concentration on that—always has been—but it’s been particularly focused in the last decade,” says Bill Raney WV Coal Assoc. President.

The memories of the lost miners seem to always be a reminder for legislators to focus on the importance of this kind of safety.

“That was certainly a horrible tragedy that changed some practices that were being done in coal mines due to that tragedy so those miners are certainly heroes in the eyes of other miners,” says Mike Caputo International U.M.W.A. District 31 Vice President.

As with any industry, as the years go on, officials tell us newer technology constantly improves the ways workers are kept safe.
