Independent water and power producer Malakoff has commissioned the 1,000MW Tanjung Bin energy power plant located in Johor, Malaysia.

Located adjacent to the Malakoff’s existing 2,100MW coal-fired Tanjung Bin power plant (TBPP), the new power plant, also known as T4, has been developed by a global consortium of GE, Mudajaya and Shin Eversendai under a contract worth over €1bn.

Designed to generate electricity required to power two million people, the coal-fired power plant features GE’s steam turbine and generator technology, ultra-supercritical boiler and environmental control systems.

Malakoff acting CEO Habib Husin said: “GE’s highly efficient technology solution implemented at our T4 plant is helping us to ensure the generation of affordable electricity at lower environmental impact.”

Additionally, the power plant’s emissions are significantly reduced through the use of low NOx burners, a efficient seawater flue gas desulphurization facility and fabric filters to lower nitrous oxide, sulphur oxide and dust emissions.

GE Steam Power Systems CEO Andreas Lusch said: “Ultra-supercritical technology has achieved efficiencies up to 47 percent-above the global average rate of existing power plants of around 30%-lowering fuel consumption and emissions. Each additional percentage point in efficiency reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 2 to 3 percent.”

Following synchronization to the National Grid on October 15, 2015, the TBE power plant has completed all the tests required for safe and reliable energy generation.

Power generated from the facility will be sold to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

A coal supply and transportation agreement was also signed between TBE and TNB Fuel Services to ensure the steady coal supply for use by the power plant to generate power.
