Kingdom Resources, a Texas company, plans to take over operations at the old Enterprise Mine on Defeated Creek at Redfox.

“We are going to reopen the number nine mine and then begin washing and loading either the end of the week or the very first part of next week,” said Kingdom Resources CEO, Mark Wilson.

Wilson said the mine will now be known as Kingdom Coal.

He said Kingdom Resources felt the mine would be a good addition to other mining properties they own in Harlan and Middlesboro.

“We wanted to pick up some of the assets…the coal assets which are very high quality,” said Wilson. “And also be able to service some of the long-standing customers.”

Knott County Judge Executive, Zach Weinberg, said he was told the company plans to hire 60 workers within the next two weeks. They hope to double the amount in the future.

“You know, they had “taking applications” on the door and so I would stop in, put my name in,” said Weinberg. “I’m sure there will be somebody there to walk you through the process.”

Weinberg is ecstatic the mine is reopening and believes it will have a huge impact on the community.

“It’s great for the folks in Knott County and Eastern Kentucky to have the opportunity to go back to work,” said Weinberg. “You know, that’s all we can ask for.”
