Kalium Lake’s proposed $216 million Beyondie potash project has been recommended for approval by WA’s environmental watchdog.

Minister for Environment Simon Dawson now has the final say on the sulphate of potash project located 160km south-east of Newman after the Environmental Protection Authority approval.

Kalium Lakes Managing Director Brett Hazelden said the company had worked closely with the EPA for four years.

“Achieving an EPA approval recommendation for the Beyondie Project is another first for the fledgling SoP industry in Western Australia,” he said.

Last week the company said it had lined up private equity player Greenstone Resources to invest $20.8 million for a 19.99 percent stake in the company.

Kalium has already secured $74 million in project debt funding from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility and a $102 million loan from Germany’s KFW/Euler Hermes.

Last month, it locked in a 10-year binding offtake agreement with German salt giant K+S covering 100 per cent of the 90,000 tonnes a year it expects to produce from stage one of Beyondie.

The company, backed by Pilbara pastoralist and helicopter charter operator Brent Smoothy, listed two years ago.

It expects to start Australia’s first commercial SOP production in 2020.
