Hudbay’s Rosemont Copper Mine Gets Forest Service Approval, Arizona
The U.S. Forest Service released it’s Record of Decision on the Rosemont Mine, located south of Tucson.
This decision approving the project has been in the works for more than 10 years. The original notice of intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement was announced in March of 2008, The EIS in response on a submitted Mine Plan of Operations submitted in 2006.
The mine is on more than 5,400 acres: 3,600 acres of which is Forest Service land. About 1,000 acres is owned by the mine’s owner, Hudbay Minerals. The remainder is other private land or State land.
Copper, molybdenum and silver is expected to mined on site.
It is important to note, this is not the final permit needed to move forward with the project. The Army Corps of Engineers must also approve the project.
Save the Scenic Santa Ritas, a group formed in opposition to the mine, says it will continue to fight to keep the mine from operating.
Vice-President of Hudbay’s Arizona business unit, Patrick Merrin, released this statement: “This decision brings us another step closer to being able to build a modern mine that will fulfill the requirements of its permits, create jobs and strengthen the local economy.”
