Hannibal Planning Board Approves BT & T’s Gravel Mine Permit, Indiana
The Hannibal Planning Board approved a special use permit without objection for a gravel mine operated by B.T. & T. Inc. The vote was 5-0 with board member Randy Hall absent from the meeting, held at the Hannibal Municipal Building.
Brad Townsend, the president of B.T. & T. Inc. and the owner of the property at 541 Harris Hill Road, spoke briefly at the beginning of the public hearing. He confirmed no changes since he submitted his application to the town — a notice of a public hearing ran in The Valley News, and he received a permit from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
About a dozen people attended the public hearing. Greg Bess, a neighbor to Townsend and B.T. & T. Inc., was the only member of the public to speak at the hearing.
“I just want to say I’m all for it,” Bess said. “Mr. Townsend has a track record, having operated a mine no more than a few 100 yards from that for over 10 years. I don’t believe this is going to cause any more problems than any permitted use in the area with the cornfields around it. It’s not going to introduce any more truck traffic than the road can handle, as is evident by the (Department of Transportation) studies.”
The public hearing was left open for an additional 30 minutes, but no one else chose to weigh in.
