Following Great Basin College’s successful launch of its Mine Skills Training facility in Elko last year, the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development allocated $502,500 to the program.

It is part of a $2,674,140 commitment by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development’s Workforce Innovations for a New Nevada fund supporting programs enhancing workforce training in mining, manufacturing, logistics among other industries.

“We are grateful to the Governor’s Office of Economic Development for their investment of $502,500 in the GBC-NORCAT (Great Basin College’s NORCAT) Mine Skills Training project,” said Dr. Amber Donnelli, president of Great Basin College.

“This funding will strengthen our ability to provide innovative, hands-on training that meets the workforce needs of Nevada’s mining and lithium industries,” added Donnelli.

In its first six months, the program trained 152 new and incumbent workers in programs including Mining Fundamentals.

“This investment ... strengthens Nevada’s workforce,” said Travis Macias, director, GBCNORCAT Mine Skills Training.

“By expanding the GBC-NORCAT Mine Skills Training program, we can provide more miners with the skills, confidence, and safety awareness they need to thrive in the industry. This benefits the mining sector and the communities we serve,” added Macias.

The program offers an innovative mix of virtual reality, augmented reality, hands-on instruction, and education training services to equip workers with the skills to fill 1,240 open jobs in the mining sector.

NORCAT is a global leader in skilled labor training and development. It acts as a one-stop shop for cutting-edge programs, services, and training that enhances safety, boosts productivity, and drives innovation.
