Grange Resources has taken out the 30th annual Tasmanian Minerals Emergency Response Competition at Queenstown over the weekend.
Grange Resources won event ahead of MMG Rosebery in second and TMERC Combined team received third.
TMERC committee chair Ben Maynard of Grange Resources said the point of the day was to be able to deliver their resources in the case of an emergency.
“The main message of the event was that collaboration is key, all in all, we are looking to see that we can help each other. Team safety was a big priority on the day,” Mr. Maynard said.
“The mining, processing and smelting operations have emergency response teams, which involves volunteers and some trained in specialized skills.”
“We have to train in a lot of disciplines because we work in remote areas that are far away from the public services.”
“It’s a competition that helps us test out our skills, in as close as we can get to a real-life situation.”
“We are competing against the clock and each other, so the pressure is real.”
“A significant thing about this event is that it supports the idea of mutual aid, which is where if there is an emergency at one mine and it becomes protracted, and they can no longer provide the support needed, then other mines will dispatch their crews.”
“This is an agreement that is unique to Tasmania; I don’t think you see this in the businesses on the mainland.”
“There were a lot of people that turned up, and we are thankful for the support from the Queenstown community.”
