Kennecott spokesperson Kyle Bennett said a work truck caught fire at the mine after 2 p.m. The fire sparked in a section of the mine that is difficult to access.

It happened near the Bingham Canyon Mine.

Areas of the mine were evacuated, and employees gathered in special areas designated in the case of an emergency.

Bennett said everyone was accounted for, and the company is allowing the fire to burn out.

The company hopes to be back to normal operating procedures Wednesday.

“That truck was near an active blast pattern,” said Bennett.

“Any time you’re mining, any time you’re working with large trucks, there is the potential for issues,” he added.

“We’re going to let a truck burn, that’s a small price to ensure people are safe.”

Regulators are now trying to determine what caused the fire.
