A fire that broke out Monday morning at Freeport McMoRan’s Sierrita Mine in Green Valley continued to burn into the afternoon before it was extinguished about 4 p.m.

No injuries were reported, a Freeport spokesman said.

The fire started at around 11 a.m. in a secondary crusher unit at Sierrita, Freeport spokesman Eric Kinneberg said.

Units from several fire districts, including Green Valley, Rural/Metro, Drexel Heights, and Corona de Tucson, as well as the Tucson Fire Department, were called to battle the two-alarm blaze.

Damage to the facilities was being assessed and the cause of the fire is under investigation, Kinneberg said.
