The A3 Hike to the “Gold Mines” will take place Sunday, Feb. 28. It will be in the Birkhead Wilderness from a trail head that is brand new.

A new trail head has opened on the east side from High Pines Church Road. The hike is planned from the new trail head to the historic “Gold Mines” area to visit one of America’s first gold rush sites that occurred in the Uwharrie Mountains.

All hikers should meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Asheboro Farmer’s Market in Downtown Asheboro for a car caravan to the site of the hike.

The length of the hike is approximately 3 hours round trip from the Farmer’s market in Asheboro.

Degree of Difficulty: Rolling Randolph County hills with changes in grade and uneven terrain.

Come out for some exercise and a little local history. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, a walking stick and a rain jacket, if needed. Refreshments and fellowship afterwards. No cost to participate and no registration required. All are welcome if you feel you can complete the hike. In case of inclement weather, the hike will be postponed.
