Operations were suspended after an employee was killed in an industrial incident at the Rio Tinto Kennecott site.

According to the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Brian Cameli was working on a piece heavy equipment inside a maintenance shop at the Bingham Canyon Mine just after 5:20 a.m. on Thursday when a large boom attached to the equipment gave way and fell, striking him. Carneli was an employee of a contracting company.

Fellow employees rendered first aid to Carneli following the accident, but were unable to revive him, and he died at the scene.

“We are devastated by the loss of our colleague, and our heartfelt sympathies are with their family, friends, teammates, and everyone in the Kennecott community. We are working closely with the relevant authorities and contractor partners to support a complete and thorough investigation,” said Rio Tinto Chief Executive Simon Trott.

“The safety of our people comes before everything else. We are fully focused on understanding what led to this tragedy. I will be traveling to Kennecott to support our team on site,” added Trott.

All surface and underground mining operations at Kennecott have been suspended and support, including counseling, is being provided to the company’s team members.
