Fatality at Recovery Pond at TransAlta’s Centralia Coal Mine, Washington
Authorities say a 28-year-old Winlock man died aboard a barge that sank in a recovery pond at the TransAlta’s Centralia mine site.
The Daily News reports Caleb D. Brown died Saturday night.
The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office says Brown was working on a 72-foot (22-meter) barge used to dredge a pond to reclaim coal. Shortly before 8 p.m., the sheriff’s office says other employees found the barge had sunk and was under about 20 feet (6 meters) of water. They could not find Brown, but they learned power to the barge, supplied by a high-voltage cable, was shut off.
Thurston County Dive Team members found Brown Sunday in the submerged cabin of the barge.
An autopsy is planned.
