A coal truck driver injured a week ago in a wreck at a loading facility has died, the state Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training said Friday.

Franklin Vannoy Jr., of Delbarton, was a coal truck driver for Stacy Equipment & Repairs Inc. He was 54 years old.

The incident occurred while Vannoy was delivering coal to the Greenbrier Minerals Elk Lick Loadout, according to a statement from the state agency. The facility is owned by Coronado Coal and located near Lorado in the Buffalo Creek area of Logan County.

The statement from the state agency said Vannoy’s “loaded coal truck unexpectedly overturned” while he was delivering coal on Feb. 3. The incident occurred at about 7:25 a.m..

The death is the first coal-mining fatality in West Virginia and the second in the U.S. in 2017, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Last year, West Virginia recorded four coal-mining deaths, more than any other state, according to MSHA.
