An employee at Asarco LLC’s Mission Mine Complex near Sahuarita was killed in a vehicle collision Thursday evening, the company and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said.

The sheriff’s office identified the victim as 41-year-old Gabriel Benitez, who was found dead at the scene by first responders at around 9:30 p.m.

Benitez apparently was sitting in his work truck, a Ford F-550, when the truck was run over by a large mining dump truck that had just finished dropping its load, the sheriff’s department said.

The driver of the dump truck showed no signs of alcohol impairment or other substance use.

“The accident was an isolated incident and no other employees were injured,” Asarco said in a prepared statement.

Asarco said it is working with federal Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Arizona State Mine Inspector’s Office to investigate the fatal crash.

The company expressed condolences but declined to comment further, citing the active investigation.
