DOE Officials to Review Wyoming Carbon Capture Efforts

A top ranking Department of Energy official will review the state of Wyoming’s clean-coal research efforts this month.
The state of Wyoming has spent millions of dollars looking at ways to save its coal industry.
One of them is a carbon capture research project at the University of Wyoming’s School of Energy Resources.
Department of Energy Assistant Secretary of Fossil Energy Steven Winberg has accepted an invitation from Governor Mark Gordon to visit the site. Winberg and several DOE staff will spend three days touring the Integrated Test Center, Wyoming Carbon Storage, Assurance and Facility Enterprise (CarbonSAFE) project, a coal mine, power plant, and facilities at the university from August 21-23.
“As the leading coal-producing state in the country and home to some of the most innovative fossil energy research, I am thrilled to highlight firsthand and on the ground the areas where Wyoming has led the way in energy and forward-looking climate solutions,” said Gordon.
The governor hopes DOE will work with the state to find avenues to move the technology concepts towards commercial development.
Gordon requested $10 million from the Wyoming legislature to be used as matching funds for a pre-combustion pilot project. $5 million was appropriated.
