BLM Opens Comments Period for Evans Coal’s Lease Application, Oklahoma
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) on a coal lease application in Oklahoma made by the Evans Coal Co., Kallanish Energy reports.
The assessment is available for a 30-day public comment period through June 10. The report was prepared in cooperation with the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement and the Oklahoma Department of Mines.
The company, with headquarters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has submitted a lease-by-application for federally segregated coal reserves underlying 1,271 acres of privately owned surface in Haskell and LeFlore counties in eastern Oklahoma.
The track contains an estimated 3.28 million tons of recoverable coal, the federal agency reported
The BLM must decide whether to hold a competitive easement sale for these coal resources. If a sale is held, the winning bidder must then obtain all necessary permits and approvals including a permit from the state Department of Mines.
The federal agency will hold a public hearing to take comment on the EA report on May 30, in McCurtain, Oklahoma. A new public comment period and hearing will be held, but comments submitted earlier will also be considered.
