Banro Corporation took precautionary measures to evacuate staff from the Namoya Mine on a temporary basis on July 3. Staff have now returned to Namoya and mining operations have resumed.

On July 3, a convoy of 23 trucks belonging to contractors of the Namoya Mine and travelling from Baraka, DRC to the Namoya Mine with supplies for the mine, was trapped in a cross fire between the Congolese national army (FARDC) and an armed group in Lulimba on the National Road 5 (N5).. The armed group currently controls the Lulimba community and its environs, and did not permit the release of the 23 trucks from Lulimba. Banro was informed that all of the drivers of the trucks were safe.

Due to the fighting at Lulimba and ongoing fighting between the FARDC and other armed groups around other communities along the N5 supply corridor and its connections, all operations at the company’s Namoya Mine were temporarily suspended and staff were evacuated on a temporary basis.

The Namoya camp and mining and processing facilities were secured by the national security agencies.

“We would like to thank the hard work and diligence of all of our staff in supporting this turnaround at the Namoya Mine. We would also like to thank the support we received from both the national and regional governments of the DRC. This support has been instrumental in the safe return of our employees and contractors to site, and the safety of the supply truck convoy that was originally stranded in Lulimba and has now been released,” said Dr. John Clarke, president and CEO of Banro.
