Agrimin Ltd has completed a geotechnical study at the Mackay Sulphate of Potash (SOP) project at Lake Mackay in Western Australia.

Importantly, the geotechnical study confirms that evaporation ponds can be constructed as cut-to-fill structures, which is the lowest cost construction method possible.

The Mackay project covers the majority of Lake Mackay, Western Australia’s largest salt lake spanning 3,500 square kilometers with a total groundwater and surface water catchment area of 87,000 square kilometers.

Agrimin is planning a 50 square kilometers preliminary pond design at Mackay to accommodate an annual brine supply of 68 million cubic meters from the proposed trenching network.

The brine will be transferred into large-scale solar evaporation ponds in which it will be concentrated to prepare potash salts, which will be converted into SOP at the processing plant.

The project has additional cost efficiencies by using un-lined evaporation ponds, given the extensive natural salt crust surface on the lakebed forming the pond floors.

The scoping study for the project is ongoing, with data coming in from evaporation trials and from various processing studies.

Agrimin’s focus on SOP production is motivated by the growth in demand for fertilizers to improve agricultural yields, driven by the world’s need to feed growing populations using shrinking arable land.
