Brookville Equipment’s Improvements to Tier 3 Engines Improves Diagnostic Capabilities
Brookville Equipment Corporation’s line of underground mining and tunneling equipment has been continuously improved since they began manufacturing this type of equipment more than thirty years ago. Over the last decade, BEC has been increasing the number of diesel units produced for the industry. Diesel regulations have pushed engine manufacturers to improve the cleanliness of their products which has made diesel equipment an option for underground operations.
The federal regulation of diesel engines in new off road equipment was initiated in 1994 for engines over 50 hp. These were called Tier 1 standards. Over the years, the regulations have increased to Tier 2 and Tier 3 standards. The Tier 1 through 3 standards are focused on the reduction of NOx (oxides of nitrogen) emissions, which can be controlled with the design of the engine. However, in 2004 the EPA issued new Tier 4 standards that will be phased in over the next few years. These new regulations require particulate matter (PM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to be reduced by an additional 90 percent over Tier 3 standards. This will mean the use of exhaust aftertreatment systems and in some cases selective catalytic reduction.
Brookville prides itself on being at the forefront of cutting edge technology. These new regulations may initially require some design changes and there may be challenges during the modification process, but BEC is confident that it will work through this to offer an even better product. The safety and health of its customers is their number one concern. These new regulations mean cleaner air and a cleaner environment.
In late 2009, BEC made a significant improvement to the Tier 3 engines that they are currently using. Brookville began installing an LED display on all electronically controlled engines. This screen will display short messages letting the operator know if there are any maintenance issues that need to be addressed. Previously, the operator could only view flash codes which were hard to decipher and overlooked at times. This new unit will improve the diagnostic capabilities of those that operate and maintain the equipment ensuring timely maintenance.
Brookville is constantly improving products to include the latest technology whether to minimize the effects of their equipment on the environment or to ensure easier maintenance. They have been providing a superior product since 1918 and will strive to continue to maintain this standard of excellence.
