Woodside Energy Names Stephane Drouaud Managing Director Mexico
Woodside Energy said Stephane Drouaud, vice president of the Trion Project, will relocate to Mexico City and in addition to his current responsibilities, will take on the role of managing director of Woodside in Mexico.
In this new role, Stephane will lead Woodside’s growing presence in Mexico, strengthening its on-the-ground leadership as the Trion Project advances toward first production in 2028. This move comes at a pivotal moment for Woodside as the execution of the Trion project is being centralized in Mexico with drilling and the installation of subsea equipment campaigns underway.
In September, Woodside CEO Liz Westcott met with President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City and signed a memorandum of understanding with PEMEX to allow analysis of potential future opportunities for exploration and extraction of hydrocarbons in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The memorandum of understanding will also facilitate the mutual exchange of technical knowledge, experience, and industry best practices in the oil and gas sector.
The meeting with President Sheinbaum was also an opportunity to share progress on Trion and discuss avenues for further partnership, reinforcing Woodside’s long-term commitment to Mexico’s energy sector.
Woodside and PEMEX are jointly developing the Trion project which is located approximately 180 kilometrers off Mexico’s coastline and 30 kilometers south of the U.S.-Mexico maritime border.
Lying in 2,500 meters of water, Trion is set to become Mexico’s first ultra-deepwater development, with first oil targeted for 2028. Trion was 64 percent complete at June 30, 2026 and represents a forecast total capital investment of $7.2 billion. Over the life of the project, Trion is expected to contribute more than $10 billion in taxes and royalties to Mexico as well as enhancing energy security.
Woodside holds a 60 percent participating interest in Trion and is the operator, with PEMEX holding the remaining 40 percent participating interest.
