Lisa A. Rickard, president of the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform (ILR) made the following statement about the lawsuit filed today by New York State against ExxonMobil using the Martin Act:

“Climate change is a serious issue that should be dealt with in the public policy arena. Today’s lawsuit filed against ExxonMobil in New York is nothing more than a contortion of the securities litigation system. In bringing this case, the state is yet again using the Martin Act as a political weapon. Litigation will not help us confront the challenge of climate change.”

ILR seeks to promote civil justice reform through legislative, political, judicial, and educational activities at the national, state, and local levels.
