Trump Calls Judge’s Decision to Halt Keystone XL Pipeline a Disgrace
A judge has ruled the Trump administration has not considered environmental consequences of the Keystone XL pipeline.
The decision is being hailed as a huge win for environmental groups and a major setback to the President.
The extension would run over 1,200 miles from eastern Alberta through Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.
The State Department put the kibosh on construction under President Obama’s presidential tenure citing the potential environmental impact, but the project got new life after the Trump administration ignored the information, reported ABC News.
“An agency cannot simply disregard contrary or inconvenient factual determinations that it made in the past, anymore than it can ignore inconvenient facts when it writes on a blank slate,” ruled Judge Brian Morris.
Pipeline construction is on hold until the State Department can fully evaluate the environmental factors, which include potential for oil spills, climate change and cultural resources.
President Trump referred to the Nov. 8 ruling as “a disgrace.”
TransCanada, the pipeline constructor, issued a statement in which it said it was reviewing the ruling but “remain(s) committed to building this important energy infrastructure project.”
The State Department says it’s reviewing the judgment and won’t comment further on ongoing litigation.
