The Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA) and the SEG Advanced Modeling Corporation (SEAM), a subsidiary of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to combine resources and jointly pursue research projects that will benefit their constituents, including the energy industry and public sectors.

By working together, the groups will address some of the greatest challenges facing the U.S. oil and gas industry. Projects of mutual interest might include life of field subsurface simulation, or the modeling of unconventional resources, CO2 sequestration, groundwater or gas storage. Both parties have strong track records for managing research that focuses on meeting the challenges to the energy industry. The MOU provides them with a platform to pursue opportunities jointly.

“RPSEA is excited to execute this MOU with SEAM. We already have a solid relationship with SEAM and this provides us with a great opportunity to pursue critical research. RPSEA’s combination of oil and gas producers, service companies and research universities — coupled with SEAM’s members, technology, and modeling capabilities — create a remarkable combination of resources that can be applied to complex research resulting in valuable insights and solutions to some of our biggest challenges,” said Tom Williams, president of RPSEA.

“SEAM is very pleased to have formalized a broader collaboration with RPSEA. This MOU builds on recent project successes and will create a platform for both organizations to access broader stakeholder participation going forward. We believe this more pervasive engagement will drive better research supported by more powerful and realistic models,” said Dr. Leon Thomsen, chairman of SEAM.

About RPSEA
Founded in 2002, RPSEA is a unique 501(c)(3) non-profit, national consortium that provides focused research and development to deploy safe and environmentally sensitive technology that can deliver hydrocarbons from domestic resources to the citizens of the United States. Its membership consists of nine of the nation’s premier research universities, five national laboratories, other major research institutions, large and small energy producers, and energy consumers.

About SEAM
The SEG Advanced Modeling Corporation (SEAM) is an industrial consortium dedicated to large-scale leading-edge geophysical numerical modeling, established in 2007 as a not-for-profit organization, and subsidiary and research arm of the Society of Exploration Geophysics (SEG). SEAM projects are funded by specific fixed term commitments from the participants, who in turn drive the modeling scope and deliverables. SEAM projects provide the geoscience community with integrated subsurface models and simulated geophysical data at a level of complexity and size that cannot be practicably computed by any single company, and that yield key insights at the nexus of subsurface reality and remote sensing observations.
